Sicily, Melting Pot of Cultures

Marsala, in the extreme point of western Sicily. La Marsa, a stone’s throw from Tunis and Carthage. The names, like the places, serve as a reminder that Sicily is a land where nations have invaded and cultures have collided. Simultaneously or successively Phoenician, Carthaginian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Swabian, Angevin, Spanish . . . and lastly, Italian.

With the coming and goings of all these civilizations, Sicily became a true melting pot of cultures with its own dialect, cuisine, and stone—the architecture is mind-blowing! Interested in Phoenician civilisation? Be sure to visit the island of Mozia, not far from Trapani. Curious about ancient Greece? More than anywhere else, Greece included, Sicily is famous for its rich Greek history, and you can learn all about it at the archaeological sites of Segesta, Agrigento, and Selinunte. As for Baroque Sicily, the Val di Noto awaits with remarkable sites like Modica, Noto, Ragusa, and Syracuse. If you love the great outdoors, head to the centre of the island where you’ll find spectacular scenery, especially in the magnificent area around Enna.
